Rescue Center for Wildcats

Rescue Center for Wildcats

Here, you will be able to have a close contact with wildcats such as cougars, jaguars or ocelots; birds like scarlet macaws, killed billed toucans, parrots, and many other animals. You can obtain basic knowledge on veterinary or biology, or apply some of the knowledge you already have. Your experience here will enrich your knowledge and your expertise on wild animals.

This project has currently reached its maximum capacity of volunteers, however, it will be available for participation again after the 26th of October.

Its area is 25 hectares and it was created officially in 1985.

The main objective of the rescue center is to attend animals confiscated by the authorities, or delivered by people worried about their welfare, to assure its recovery in a suitable environment and its eventual return to its natural habitat. Those that are not able to return to their habitats are kept in the rescue center, where they will have appropriate conditions for their life, in captivity. The intention of the Center is to help with the environmental education of its visitors, offering them the opportunity of observing a wide variety of wild species in a similar environment to its natural habitat so they learn some basic facts of the natural history of these animals and the main threats to there survival.

Work to do:

. Prepare food for the animals
. Feed to the animals
. Clean the bird cages
. Help to build new cages
. Prepare games for the animals
. Infrastructure maintenance
. Improve the information provided to the tourists
. Guide tourists that visit this Rescue Center
. Prepare signs and informative material about the animals in the Center

In the Center there is available lodging for four voluntary at the same time only. The volunteer house has two bedrooms and a bathroom. Each bedroom has two beds with one pillow, sheets and blankets. Normally, you will share a dormitory with another volunteer. In the communal house there are other available facilities, like a kitchen and a living room. The meals are offered in the Center, three times a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner). The food in the project is of a costa rican typical meal, always accompanied by rice, beans, pastes, meats, vegetable and fruits.

You have a day off per week, which can be negotiated with the Center’s administration. It is possible to use the telephone with a telephone card and to use the Internet during the day off, or go somewhere else.
